Notes of Lessons: Carton Work, Class Ia

[We have thought that it might be of use to our readers (in their own families) to publish from month to month during the current year, Notes of Lessons prepared by students of the House of Education for the pupils of the Practising School. We should like to say, however, that such a Lesson is never given as a tour de force, but is always an illustration or an expansion of some part of the children’s regular studies (in the Parents’ Review School), some passage in one or other of their school books.—Ed.]

Group: Handicrafts • Class Ia • Time: 20 minutes

By Violet R. Saunders
The Parents’ Review, 1904, p. 142

Objects

I. To give T_____ an extra lesson as he is far behind the other children of Class I.

II. To give him some idea of size and measurement.

III. To teach him to use his fingers more easily, and to be neater in his work.

Lesson

Step I.—Give T_____ the model and ask him what he thinks is the size of it.

Step II.—Let him measure it and mark off on his own paper the right lengths, helping him to hold the ruler, as his hand is not strong enough to hold it entirely by himself.

Step III.—Let him look at the model, and ask him where he thinks the little flaps should come on his own model.

Step IV.—After ruling all the lines let him cut out his model, being very careful to keep all his lines quite straight.

Step V.—Then let him bend up all the parts which are to be bent, always using his ruler and folder, and being very exact.

Step VI.—Paste each flap separately and hold each leg of the table till it is firmly stuck.
