In my own education, geometry was a one-year excur In my own education, geometry was a one-year excursion from the relentless march through numbers and symbols to calculus. In Charlotte Mason’s PNEU, by contrast, geometry was a journey in itself, spanning as many as six years.

Beginning in Form IIA, students were introduced to practical geometry, learning constructions as old, it might seem, as math itself. This flowed naturally into analytical geometry and Euclidian proofs, a far-reaching trek in a mountainous region of mathematics that lasted well into Form V.

Why this extended engagement with a subject that I only experienced for a year? Did the PNEU have some kind of special fondness for this kind of math? Actually, I think the answer is found in the science of relations. Mason wrote that “our business is not to teach him all about anything, but to help him to make valid as many as may be of—‘Those first-born affinities That fit our new existence to existing things.’” All relationships take time to form. Geometry is no exception.

Last week in school we saw a passing reference to the golden ratio. I got out my dictionary of mathematics and took a moment to show the article to my son. After a few minutes of quiet reading, he burst out with a shout: “I can make the golden ratio with a construction!” Before I could grab a blank piece of paper, he already had the compass out and the design in his head. In a heartbeat he was measuring two lines and the ratio was there.

At that moment I realized why we had spent those years in practical geometry and beyond. It was to build a relationship. My son was surrounded by his memories and his tools. When an idea struck, he was not alone. His friends were right there at his side.

For over a dozen years, I’ve been reading and st For over a dozen years, I’ve been reading and studying Charlotte Mason’s volumes with countless parents and teachers. Certain patterns always emerge. There are the expressions of inspiration and excitement; there are the wistful longings: “Oh if only I had been educated in this way”; there are the resolutions to break old habits and start to form new ones.

And then there are the questions. Sooner or later, in any reading group or study, eventually someone asks one question in particular. It’s about the Bible. The wording of the question varies, but the core is always the same. It goes something like this: “What does Charlotte Mason mean when she talks about essential and accidental truth?”

Over the years I’ve heard every conceivable answer to the question. I’ve made my own attempts to answer it on the fly. Recently, however, I received a pointed query from a friend, and I decided it was time to get serious. No ad hoc answer this time. I rolled up my sleeves and studied everything Charlotte Mason said about the Bible. I looked in the volumes, the meditations, and the poetry.

Today I’m pleased to share the result of my investigation. Please join me in an exhaustive exploration of Charlotte Mason’s views on the authority of Scripture. It’s a journey that ends where it always begins when it comes to Charlotte Mason: the faith of a child. Link in profile.

“Give the children time to grow. Give them time “Give the children time to grow. Give them time to think. Remember the words of the poet, “The thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts." Obedience must be taught; discipline must be wrought; learning must be instilled. Nevertheless find time, make time, if needs be take time from other things, that the child, or better still the children, may have their seasons free from grown-up restraint. Their happiness will be securer, their natures sweeter, their development surer, for the times of unconscious being. Their moral standpoint will be insensibly raised by the unrecognized yet appreciated confidence placed in them; and above all they will keep for a longer period—perhaps in a measure all their lives—the child-spirit which, precious as it is, stands in so great a risk of being lost for ever in the modern rush of life, the eagerness to excel, the struggle for the front rank.” (Reynolds, The Parents’ Review, Vol. 10, p. 158)
