In 1925, Elsie Kitching wrote, “Miss Mason’s p In 1925, Elsie Kitching wrote, “Miss Mason’s philosophy and methods are very fully set forth in her books, but the books are written with such apparent simplicity that, as a friend once said to me, there is a danger of sliding along the top of the words without touching the profound thought below. It is good, therefore, to confer together, so that our diggings below the surface may be mutually helpful.”

A century later, Kitching’s words seem prophetic. Around the world every single day, parents and teachers are reading and conferring together to understand Charlotte Mason’s volumes. These home educators and teaching professionals want to get below the surface of the words and touch the profound thought below.

But why read six hefty volumes? No other method of education requires so much work. Isn’t it enough to just find a good Charlotte Mason curriculum and run with it?

No, it’s not enough. Charlotte Mason, Elsie Kitching, and Helen Wix all anticipated that you might ask. Drawing heavily from their words, I’ve written up a challenge for you: a challenge to read Mason’s six volumes in two years. And I’ve also written about a few new reading groups that might help you along the way. You’ll find it at the profile link.

On Friday, many Christians remembered John the Bap On Friday, many Christians remembered John the Baptist, since June 24 is the day when the Nativity of John the Baptist is commonly celebrated. Normally the date of the death of a saint is chosen for his or her feast day; however, there are two exceptions. One is Mary the mother of Jesus, and the other is John the Baptist. Why has John the Baptist been held in such honor by the church since its earliest days? This is the question Charlotte Mason contemplates in her poem today. Entitled simply “John the Baptist,” it asks in essence, “What has *he* done for us?” As would be expected from Miss Mason, the answer is both challenging and comforting, sober and hopeful. Read or hear it at the profile link today.

🖼️: St. John the Baptist in the Wilderness by Hieronymus Bosch
On my first day of college, I walked into the Russ On my first day of college, I walked into the Russian Department and saw these words on a bulletin board: “Beauty will save the world.” Shortly after, I began reading Charlotte Mason’s volumes and was struck by her “appeal to the beauty and truth of Mathematics.”

These two meetings with Dostoevsky and Mason changed the course of my life and caused me to see Beauty and God in a whole new light.

So, when I heard of this new book by @timothywillard I waited patiently for its release. It’s just arrived and I can’t wait to give it a slow thoughtful read. If you’d like to learn more about the author, his wife Christine, and their work, @modernmissmason has a fantastic interview with them on her podcast. Linked in profile.

Lady’s slipper orchids are the most precious wil Lady’s slipper orchids are the most precious wildflowers we have around us. They are very few and far between near where we live, which makes them such an absolute joy to find!

These lovelies were in a ditch by a farmer’s field just steps from campus.

Do you have a special wildflower you are always on the lookout for?
